The Secret of Roan Inish

in
Though my preference in movies changes like the weather in St. Louis, there are a few that are on my list of movies I wouldn't want to be deleted from existence.

One of those movies is The Secret of Roan Inish. It was filmed in Donegal, Ireland, directed by John Sayles, and released in 1994.

It was based on the novel, The Secret of Ron Mor Skerry, by Rosalie K. Fry.

The Wikipedia entry for the movie states:
"It is centered on the Scottish folklore of Selkies (people who can transform themselves into seals) which Sayles adapted to an Irish setting. The story is about Fiona, a young girl who is sent to live with her grandparents near the island of Roan Inish, where the Selkies are rumored to reside. It is an old family legend that her younger brother was swept away in his infancy and raised by a selkie."

To me, it's a feel-good movie, with the magical charm of Ireland, in a timeless setting. A perfect escape.

1984 by George Orwell

1984 is one of our favorites because it was only about 20 years off the mark. We already see so many of the things that were brought to life in this book that are a part of our everyday lives. Big Brother is watching. There is always an enemy. We encourage everyone to read this classic because it really is a great picture of what could, so easily, be.
